Ed Martin Seafood & Ice Company

In 1935, Edmond J. Martin, Jr., opened the Ed Martin Seafood and Ice Company, located at 300 Sala Avenue. By 1940, he was selling shrimp in 42 states and many foreign countries. His specially processed shrimp became the basis for the popular shrimp cocktail.

During World War lI, the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps was their biggest customer. 

After the shrimp were peeled, the heads and shells were dried and machine ground into a powder, and sold as "shrimp meal." It was used as fertilizer and feed for chickens and hogs. The shrimp -factory continued to operate until 1975.

The Ed Martin Seafood and Ice Company was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on September 29, 2000.
